Is a crypto casino safe? Licensing and safety guide
No casino is risk-free, and crypto adds its own risks. You can reduce them by checking who runs a site, protecting your accounts and wallet, and keeping your gambling within limits you set in advance.
What a licence does and does not tell you
A gambling licence means a regulator has authorised the operator under its rules. Regulators differ widely in how strictly they supervise operators and handle complaints. Regulators such as the UK Gambling Commission and the Malta Gaming Authority are generally regarded as stricter on player protection than many offshore jurisdictions, and many crypto casinos rely on offshore licences, for example from Curaçao or Anjouan.
A licence does not mean an operator is allowed to serve players in every country. In the UK, for example, operators serving UK consumers generally need a UK Gambling Commission licence. Check the law and the restricted-country terms for your location.
How to check a licence
- Find the licence statement in the casino’s footer or legal pages. Note the licence number and the company named.
- Look up that number on the regulator’s own website or register, not only on the casino’s page.
- Check that the company named on the register matches the one in the terms and that the licence covers the domain you are using.
- Check that the licence is current and not suspended or revoked.
Fake sites, impersonation and scams
- Popular casinos are copied by fake sites designed to steal logins and funds. Check the full web address before you sign in or deposit.
- Be wary of unsolicited messages on Telegram, Discord, X or email that offer bonuses, “support” or recovery of lost funds.
- Genuine support will never ask for your wallet seed phrase or private keys.
- Recovery services that promise to get lost crypto back for an upfront fee are commonly scams.
Red flags
- No named company, licence or terms.
- Terms that allow the operator to void winnings for vague reasons.
- Pressure to deposit quickly or to deposit more to unlock a withdrawal.
- Unrealistic bonuses or guaranteed-win claims.
- Support that avoids questions about withdrawals.
Protecting your account and wallet
- Use a unique, strong password and two-factor authentication (an authenticator app is generally safer than SMS).
- Do not keep more on a casino than you are prepared to lose.
- Send from a wallet you control, and keep your seed phrase offline and private.
- Review wallet approvals and signatures carefully (see our Ethereum guide).
Gambling responsibly
Set a budget and time limit before you start, and treat gambling as paid entertainment, not income. Use deposit limits, reality checks and self-exclusion if the operator offers them. If gambling stops being fun or you are chasing losses, stop and seek support. See our responsible gambling page for organisations that can help.
If something goes wrong
- Gather evidence: screenshots, transaction IDs, emails and the terms that applied.
- Contact the operator’s support and use its formal complaints process.
- If the operator names a licence regulator or an independent dispute service, escalate there.
- Be aware that, with offshore operators, your options may be limited.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Curaçao licence enough to make a casino safe?
It shows the operator has been authorised by that regulator, but protections differ from those in more strictly supervised markets, and it does not make the operator legal in your country. Do your own checks.
How can I tell if a casino site is fake?
Check the full domain, compare it with the operator’s official channels, avoid links from unsolicited messages and be wary of any page that asks for your seed phrase.
What should I do if I suspect I am gambling too much?
Stop, use any limits or self-exclusion tools available, and contact a support organisation. Our responsible gambling page lists some.
